Tequila….the cause and cure of many of life’s problems. I kid, I kid. Seriously, though, alcohol is one of those double-edged swords in life- you want to have a drink but then you don’t really want the extra sugar and the foggy head the next day. That’s why I set out to craft the best skinny margarita for myself to drink a few years ago. And since I am a giver, I am sharing it with you.
The foggy head, the extra days to recover……that’s what happens now, at age 45, when I think about having more than one or two drinks. I’m concerned I won’t feel good for my workout and HomeGoods runs on the weekend. In college, my main concern was the 2am pizza call. Oh, college. That was fun.
Why is this the best skinny margarita?
I have become known among my friends and family for my margaritas and I love making them this way because it is just fresh juice, tequila, triple sec and club soda. I can make one drink or make several at a time. It is the perfect combination of tart, sour and sweet. The best skinny margarita, in other words.
As I have been adulting now for a while, I have come to realize that I enjoy having a quality drink, or 2, a couple times a week but that is about all I care to drink these days. Since I avoid gluten, I don’t drink beer. I mainly drink a little wine, tequila or gin, but can’t stand overly sweet drinks. The amount I drink these days varies quite a bit. I might go a month with a drink or I might have a couple on the weekend. I talked a little more about my relationship with alcohol in this blog post. That’s why when I do drink, I want it to be good.
what kind of tequila should you use?
Use the best kind of tequila you can afford. My personal preference and opinion is that silver tequila is best used for margaritas while the aged reposado and the darker anejo are better for sipping on their own. Play around with it and see what you like. Here are a few of my favorite tequilas:
- Patron Silver
- Casamigos Blanco
- Tres Agaves Organic
- Kirkland Silver Tequila (Costco)
- Trader Joe’s Blanco Tequila
is this drink sugar free?
No, this drink is not sugar free as there is a little sugar in the triple sec. If that is something you avoid, you can leave it out or cut the amount in half. The orange flavor it adds is great thought! When you order a margarita at a restaurant, the sour mix can have up to three times the sugar the triple sec adds. I also think artificial sweetener in alcoholic drinks is the worst so I avoid that at all costs.
can i make this margarita for a few friends?
Yes! It’s so easy to multiply the servings. I have included the measurements for 4 servings but I have easily spread that amount over 6 drinks.
Now that the weather has finally turned into spring and warmer days are approaching, make a few drinks, invite some friends over and enjoy it on the deck.
